GRANTS FOR RELIEF
£2,420 DISTRIBUTED AMONG ’QUAKE SUFFERERS ALLOWANCES FOR WIDOWS Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The Central Earthquake Committee* which met this week, passed a resolution taking strong exception to the action of some refugees who have abused the opportunity granted them of being reasonably fitted out with necessary clothing, and stating that the amount already expended out of relief funds on behalf of refugees would be taken into account in considering applications for assistance in the restoration of properties. It was decided that provision would require to be made for widows and dependents of persons killed during the earthquake, either by the purchase . of annuities or by the setting aside in trust of sufficient moneys to provide a reasonable Income according to the requirements of each case. The recommendation of the Murchison Relief Committee that allowances be paid to farmers who had been deprived of access to their properties was discussed and approved, and a resolution passed that, “pending the restoration of access to all farm properties, an allowance be paid to all settlers concerned at a rate to he determined in accordance to the circumstances of each settler.” A sub-committee was set up to consider the question of providing access to Coi-byvale.
Special grants totalling £2,420 14s Sd, to 169 applicants, were approved on the recommendation of the district committees. As regards other applications received, a sub-committee was appointed to consider them and report as early as possible.
It was reported that a competition under the name of “Prize Pars, Number One,” somewhat in the nature of a puzzle competition, had been organised aud tickets were being sold indicating that 10 per cent, of the net profit is to go to the relief fund. The committee wished it known that it had not given its sanction to any such competitir-i, and that, in any entertainment or other form of raising funds, one condition must be that the whole of the net proceeds must be applied to the fund. The competition referred to is being investigated by the Government.
