WHARF MISHAP

SLING LOAD CRASHES A narrow escape was experienced by a number of waterside workers unloading the steamer Papanui, when a chain-sling, around a sling of railwayiron weighing more than SO cwt, broke while being lowered by a Harbour Board crane on to a railway wagon at the Queen’s Wharf yesterday morning. Breaking of the chain caused the rails to strike the crane platform, damaging it. The slanted rails forced the wagon along the wharf and then fell away from the crane with a resounding crash. In the meantime every man had been able to run for safety into the shed.
