SCHOOL FETE STARTS

COUNTESS OF ORFORD OPENS SHOW MANUREWA DISPLAY - j In spite of the bad weather prevail- 1 ing yesterday afternoon, there was a - large attendance of parents and friends, at the annual exhibition of work of the ; pupils attending the Manurewa District . School. A sale of work was held in ■ conjunction with the exhibition, and the proceeds are to be devoted to the ' school funds. A streak of blue sky showed through the drifting clouds, and the rain stopped for a few minutes, enabling the Countess of Orford to say a few words to the children, before declaring the function open. Lady Orford complimented the pupils on the splendid exhibition, of work displayed, and said the models of old English castles brought back to her sweet memories of her home. She also admired the model of a Maori pa. The exhibition was then declared open. Lady Orford received a bouquet from Noreen White, and Lady Ann Walpole was given a beautiful posy by Inez He Jough. The exhibition was a comprehensive display of work done by the scholars from the primers to standard 6, and included sand work, plasticine models, sewing, printing and woodwork, reflecting great credit on the staff and pupils. Stalls were arranged in. the corridors and shelter sheds, and were the means of collecting funds for the school. They were in charge of: Vegetables and grocery- stall, Mr. W. Wotherspoon, Mesdames Webber, Jones, and Miss Gray; sweet stall, Mrs. Lloyd and Miss Inglis: Jumble stall. Mesdames Lupton and Pilcher; Fancy stall, Mrs. Osborne, Misses A. White and K. Harris; cake stall Mrs. Wilcox and Miss Noble; afternoon tea stall, Mesdames Sexton, McCallum, Middleton, Pendergrast, Hawthorn and Weir.
