FARMERS ON TAXATION RECONSIDERATION URGED (Special to THE SUK) WELLINGTON, Today. „-A resolution protesting against the Government’s taxation proposals was reaffirmed at a specially convened conference representative of the Dominion Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Sheepfarmers’ Federation today. A depuation was appointed to wait on the Prime Minister. Commercial interests supported the protest, realising that a blow to the agricultural industries was a blow to their success, said Mr. TV'. J. Poison, M.P.. president of the Farmers’ Union, who presided. No amendments had been made to the taxation proposals in principle, and there was still the glaring injustice of taxing a man “up to his eyes in mortgages.” He considered that the Government had been misled by certain of its permanent officials into an ill-advised step, and held the farmers were perfectly justified in asking for a reconsideration of the whole measure. Mr. H. H. Duxfield thought it was hopeless to try and secure an amendment. He moved that the conference ask that the proposals stand over for some time. His views were echoed by Mr. J. H. John, who seconded the motion. That tho measure would cause further depression and make the next 12 months a very difficult period was the opinion expressed by Mr. J. S. Jessep. The meeting carried the following motion: “That this conference reaffirms its dissatisfaction with the proposals of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill and expresses dissatisfaction with the proposed amendments. It asks the Prime Minister to incorporate the resolutions passed by the primary producers on August 22 in further amending legislation, and that this legislation be not made retrospective.” N.Z.
