SCHOOL LEAVING-AGE

LARGER EDUCATION GRANTS IN BRITAIN BIG INCREASE TO BE MADE British Official Wireless RUGBY, Thursday. State grants of 50 per cent., instead of! the present 20 per cent., are to be given to local education authorities to enable them to implement the proposed legislation for raising the school leaving-age to 15. The legislation *will come into effect in eighteen months’ time. The Board of Education, in a circular, explains that this large increase in State assistance to local authorities is to ensure the rapid provision of suitable accommodation. The Board does not anticipate any shortage of suitable teachers. It thinks that some of those now unemployed could be absorbed, while others about to retire could be retained, and married women teachers, in suitable cases, could be recalled.
