LATE WITH RETURNS
CHARGES BY COMMISSIONER OF TAXES FINES OF £Z IMPOSED Two men, one of whom had been late with his income-tax returns for six years, and the other, of whom had failed to furnish a return of land for five years, were each fined £2 and costs in the Police Court this morning. The charges were brought by the Commisisoner of Taxes, and Mr. Hubble prosecuted. Dr. Sidney Harland Ward pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to make income-tax returns within the required time. Mr. Hubble said that in 1924 defendant’s return had been two months late, in 1923 one month late, 1926 five mouths late, 1927 seven months late, in 192 Sno return had been received at all, and the 1929 return had not yet been received, although defendant had assured coun*«l that it would be in the hands of the department by now. For defendant it was explained that he tvas a doctor at Whangarei. He a very busy man and had left things to his accountant, who had got behind with the work. The doctor bad been occupied with an epidemic >n Whangarei. ‘This man lias owned land valued a t £SOO since 1924. and has sent in no returns," said Mr. Hubble, when John Robert Simpson pleaded guilty to failnf- t 0 Danish a return of land. -Negligence was the excuse offered °a defendant’s behalf.
