PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEES COMPLAIN PIECEWORK RATES TOO LOW Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday S ditions under which Public Works employees are engaged were brought before Sir Joseph Ward by a deputation from the New Zealand Worker** Union today. Mr. A. Cook, general secretary, said dissatisfaction still exsited with tb® piecework rates. There were dotens of men who were not making more than from eight to 13 shillings a dar There was also the question of the loss of privileges through men being transferred from a standard job to relief works. It was further asked that free railway passes at the annual holiday tiiu® be granted to Public Works employees and families in very isolated districts. Sir Joseph Ward promised to confer with the Minister of Public Works a.* the Minister of Railways. lie was sympathetic in regard to both the request for free passes and the question of loss of privileges wheie men were transferred to relief works Mr 11. r.. Holland, who introduced the deputation, said there should be soni* method of appeal if it was felt the rate was fixed at too low a point. Sir Joseph Ward: Quite so.
