STAMPING OUT WEEDS

NEW LYNN DECIDES ON DRASTIC ACTION SANCTION FOR LOANS Drastic action to enforce the clearing of weeds was decided upon by the New Lynn Borough Council at last evening’s meeting, .Mr. C. F. Gardner presiding. Though it was pointed out that a borough inspector must first obtain an order from a magistrate, it was decided to enforce the regulations notwithstanding the extra work involved. The council was advised that a commission is to be set up to allocate the costs to each local body interested in the construction of a new bridge over the YVhau Creek. A petition from residents of Portage Road asked the council to refuse its consent to a proposed pottery works being established on the corner of Great North Road and Portage Road. The matter was referred to the council in committee. A communication was received from the Local Government Loans , Board submitting sanction (in part) of the proposed supplementary loans, (a) drainage sewerage £7,500, and (b) main highways construction, £1,059 9s Id. The council took exception to the restrictions imposed, and it was recommended that further representations be made and that the matter be brought to the notice of the member for the district and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, with a, request for support in an endeavour t.o secure reconsideration of the matter. NEGLECTED NOTICES TROUBLE AT GLEN EDEN ROAD WORK LABOUR Out of 6-1 notices sent ouit by the noxious weeds inspector of the Glen Eden Town Board only eight have been complied with, absentee owners being the worst offenders. This was reported at last evening’s meeting of the board, Mr. Martin presiding. It was resolved to take more drastic action. In connection with the metalling and forming of Brandon and Clayburn Roads, it was decided to call for local unemployed labour, points of consideration to be whether the applicant is a ratepayer, length of residence, number of dependants and qualifications. A request from the tennis club that the board lease a portion of the recreation ground for extension purposes was referred to the board’s solicitor. It was decided that separate tenders be called for the supply and delivery of material for metalling Brandon and Clayburn Roads. A rate of 14-64 din the pound was struck for the Clayburn Road loan.
