country meeting over a mile and.ahalf, Reynard will be conceding big starts to some of his opponents,- if his last Plpsom. handicap is anv criterion, and his party may find it advisable to race him with the pacers. Few horses in either section have anything on the Californian gelding at getting away from the tapes. Persevering Trainer George Webb is persevering with \anity Boy,* and the aged gelding is executing his work in solid fashion at Epsom. In his last few' starts the son of Norminston has shaped prominently, and there is every reason to be optimistic about liis chances of landing a stake at one of the small fixtures. The Epsom trainer has not had much share in Dame Fortune’s smile during the last couple of seasons and should he score with Vanity Boy the win will be popular. Lady Barrington Again T. Paton, who is attending to Lady Barrington’s preparation, also has a novice in hand that claims Peter Moko as his sire. He is a big chap that will probably take some time to develop into a racing proposition. Lady Barrington is looking in nice condition to commence the more serious business, and she should not bo long in striking form. Tlie Gold Bell mare did not race with any luck, last season, although she was always in the picture during the running of her heats. Pair For Whangarei Lord Nepean, and his son, Lord Lu, are being kept up to the collar by owner-trainer F. Young, and both pacers are bearing a bright, healthy appearance. They may not be taken to the Waikato fixture, but at present it is their owner’s intention to make the trip to Whangarei, where Lord Nepean’s mission will probably be the principal event.. Lord Lu, who has not fulfilled his earlier promise, will be given a chance in the saddle heat, and the distance, one mile, should be all in his favour.

Wrackler, who last year demonstrated what a great three-year-old he was, did not take long to get on the winning list in the new season, the mile and a-quarter heat at Ashburton on Saturday falling to his portion. Although 84yds behind, the crack youngster was decidedly well treated on a 2.50 mark (it is understood the limit was 2.57), and it was surprising that he did not start actual favourite. Admirers of the Wrack gelding ehould be in for a good time again this season. Good Derby Prospects Purser’s finishing effort in the tenfurlong event at Ashburton during the week-end was of such a nature as, to put his many Derby friends on good terms with themselves. The Man o’ War gelding came at the right end, and he will bo in apple-pie order when the November classic comes up for decision. There is no doubt that Purser is a fine young pacer, and his blue riband prospects are certainly rosy, but he will not have things all his own way, with Ngingo Ngingo and Great Parrish in the field.

Jackie’s Turn at Last Jackie Logan’s improvement was evidently well anticipated at Ashburton, as the son of Logan Pointer and Golden Lily was made a warm order for the mile and a-half trot on Saturday. He never caused his army of supporters any uneasiness, and won nicely at the finish. For some time Jackie Bogan has been expected to come into the limelight, and now that he has broken the ico may do better. Will Get One Yet Otaio Rose ran a genuine race on Saturday at Ashburton in the 1--furlong heat, but was not good enough to top off Jackie Logan when it came to the business end. After her recent second to Student Prince, it vas Generally conceded that Otaio Rose uould have a royal chance of going one better in the race ill question, hut Se«nite this she was allowed to start it a good price. While not likely to rcach a high mark, Otaio Rose should blossom one of these days, when the opposition is not too solid.

A Useful Colt According to accounts from the South of the running on Saturday at Ashburton in the 12-furlong neat, tne Derby colt. Lord Matchlight, sras a«£ be equal to winning the classics, should later on pick up a stake two.
