STRAND
“THE BLACK WATCH” “Victor McLaglen’s best picture,” is the general verdict of those who have seen the Fox Movietone production, “The Black Watch,” now at the Strand Theatre. Fox Movietone means that it is an all-dialoguo production. McLaglen enacts the role of “Captain Donald Gordon King,” of the “Black Watch,” who is sent to India at the outbreak of the World Wax* on a secret mission for his Government. His brother officers incline to the belief that “King” asked for the detail solely to avoid actual fighting, but the evolution of the story reveals that King upheld all the traditions of his regiment, proved himself a valiant soldier and accomplished the objective of his Government, though he had a fight on his hands mostly because of the intrigue and scheming of a most exotic woman, “Yasmani,” who aspired to rule India. The supporting cast rates the designation of all-star with such names as Myrna Loy, David Kollins, Lumsden Hare, Roy D’Arcy, Mitchell Lewis, Cyril Chadwick, Col. McDowell and Waiter Long. This film has received the enthusiastic commendation of the Film Society, which praises both the photography and fine enunciation and voice of the principal actors. The talking and singing features which make up the remainder of the programme include an all-talking comedy, "His First Lesson,” a new Fox Movietone News, a Fox Variety Travelogue, and songs and dances by Randolph's Royal Hawaiians.
