DENNIS BARRY
FAREWELL PROGRAMME An appreciative audience in the Town Hall concert chamber on Saturday evening bade an enthusiastic farewell to Dennis Barry, formerly of the Allan Wilkie Shakespearian Company. His grace of gesture and faultless memory gave a delightful air of freedom and spontaniety, no suggestion of a “recital” marring the performance. Dennis Barry, actor-singer, showed himself equally at home with Shakespeare and with modern humorists. His programme on Saturday night included Mark Antony’s oration over Julius Caesar delivered with perfect diction and free from that rant which spoils many Shakespearian actors. Mr. Barry also gave an Oscar Wilde fairy tale, two selections from A. P. Herbert, a number of Aesop’s Fables and the poem, “The Jackdaw of Rheims.” His pleasing tenor voice was heard to advantage in numerous songs, both old-time and modern.
The accompaniments were played by Miss Margot St. Lawrence Toner, who assisted with a varied selection of pianoforte solos.
