GOOD RACING CONDITIONS Zircon Wins Hurdle Event

THE Avondale Jockey Club’s spring fixture reached finality today in excellent weather. There was a large attendance and the course was in good order. Backers commenced well, the favourite, Zircon, winning the hurdles easily from an outsider in Kahepoto. Chief* Euler won the Nursery Handicap after a good set-to with Orapai, both youngsters being well fancied. Prince Val followed up his good form of Saturday by downing a warm favourite in Refresher in the Mt. Albert Handicap,-with a big outsider in Bombarder close up third. Following are the results:—

Zircon was’ a warm fancy in the opening event, the Grey Lynn Hurdles, and ho carried £689, while there was good support also for Red Comet £550 and Kauri Park £sll, Rahepoto carrying only £llß. Red Comet and Waltzer made the pace a cracker, but the former tipped out at the third fence. Passing the stands Waltzer was 20 lengths out in front of the field, Rahepoto, Kamehamelia, Zircon. Karamu, and Gold Rep being in close order, with Kauri Park and Glenotus following. Along fhe back Waltzer was still clear, where Zircon went out in pursuit, and was within four lengths of the loader at the home turn, with the remainder, headed by Rahepoto, Karamu, Glenotus and Ivamehameha, were well back. Zircon was upsides with Waltzer, the latter falling, and the favourite went on to score easily by four lengths from the outsider Rahepoto, with Glenotus three parts of a length back. Orapai vas soon in front from Betterment, Lady Court, Running Over, Foot Rule, Biddy’s Boy (who dwelt slightly), Royal Ruler and Sight Draft. Into the straight Betterment had a slight advantage over Orapai, with Foot Rule handy and Lady Court, Sight Draft, Royal Ruler, Biddy’s Boy, Set Fair, Running Over and Illuminagh. Lady Court and Orapai were having a good go at the distance when Royal Ruler came along and got up to win comfortably by three parts of a length from Orapai, with Lady Court two lengths back. Biddy’s Boy was finishing on a length away in fourth place, and next over the line were Betterment, Sight Draft, FOot Rule, Running Over and Illuminagh.
