“INCUBUS AND SCOURGE”
STRICKLAND ATTACKED BY MALTESE WARNING BY THE POPE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.6 p.m. ROME, Friday. An important Catholic newspaper, the Bologna “Avenire d’ltalia,” publishes an interview with M. Dandria, Minister, of Education in the Malta Ministry, which preceded Lord Strickland’s Ministry. M. Dandria attacks Lord Strickland’s Catholic policy. Whether or not now the election depended on how far the Imperial authorities continue to stand by Lord Strickland’s policy, the Pope already has warned them that the policy is harmful to Imperial interests, and not only those of Malta. M. Dandria hoped Britain would listen to the voice of an oppressed people desiring liberation from a man whom Maltese patriots regarded as an incubus and a scourge. The “Daily Telegraph’s’’ Rome correspondent adds: “Although M. Dandria’s viewpoint is representative of an important section of Maltese political life, as well as the Vatican opinion, they somewhat exaggerate the present Maltese situation.”
