TAUMARUNUI NEWS
The Taumarunui Borough Council, at its last meeting, resolved again to communicate with the police in regard to better control of pedestrian traffic in the main street footpaths, and to investigate the provision of signs and the painting of white lines in the centre of the main street footpath for the purpose of assisting the police. A proposal for the erection of shelter rooms for bus passengers at the stops on the Matapuna Road was referred to the Works Committee. Arising out of -the electrical engineer’s report it was resolved to inform the Railway Department that, owing to high capital and sinking fund costs on the loan moneys, no reduction could be granted in the charge for electrical energv. • * 9 A meeting of Taumarunui sportsmen convened at the instance of the cycling club resolved to organise an athletic sports meeting to be held on the Domain on Labour Day. Mr. J. Lawrence, who presided, was of the oipnion that a very successful meeting could be conducted, and possibly the United Friendly Societies would be prepared to allow the club to run its King Country championship event as an added attraction. All proceeds from the meeting are to be devoted toward the purchase of a wireless set for the public hospital. * • * Recently the Auckland Automobile Association suggested to the borough council that traffic domes be dispensed with in Hakiaha and Manuaute Streets, and that white lines be adopted in these thoroughfares for the guidance of motorists. The suggestion is to be acted on by the borough council, and the innovation will be undertaken at an early date.
