“AVERAGE PERIOD FOUR YEARS” An English farming journal discussing the average profitable life of a cow In a dairy herd, states that two j prominent Scottish investigators, Mr. | R. R. Kay and Mr. Andrew McCan- | dlish, of the milk production departj ment of the West of Scotland Agricultural College, Glasgow, are of the opinion that the period may be set at four years. They have been inquiring into the factors that affect the yield and quality of milk, and have come to the conclusion that maximum production in a cow is usually reached between seven and eight years of age. They state definitely that “the average life of a cow in a dairy herd is around four years,” and they infer that a very large percentage of the cows are removed from the herd before they reach the age of greatest usefulness.
