SMALL BIRD CAMPAIGN

The Timaru branch of the Farmers’ Union inaugurated a small birds destruction campaign, when it was estimated that about 150,000 birds were destroyed. The success of the operaations was an incentive to the union to repeat the campaign this year. In places the birds are now remarkably scarce, while in others they are as plentiful as ever. Last year the union stood to lose £20 —if the scheme was not successful, but the loss had only been £4, and if the scheme was carried on for several more seasons a marked diminution in the number of birds would result. Poisoned wheat was used, and is supplied by the union in 71b tins, each of which, if the grain is distributed effectively, was capable of killing 100 dozen birds.
