TE AROHA NOTES

AVONDALE CANDIDATES (Special to THE SUN) TE AROHA, Friday. Mr. R. Hines's Day Comet two-year-old, Balfour, who has been off the track for a couple of weeks, returned to work this week. He has furnished of late, and bids fair to be one of the most solid Day Comets in appearance. His breeding lines are good, his dam being by Poiydamon from the Cuirassier mare Jen a. He is not to be hurried in his preparation, and will be given every chance of racing up to his breeding. It looks as if Grand Arch is to be given plenty of time to get into solid racing condition, and it will probably be November at the Waikato meeting before he is asked to carry silk. He looks well and is doing ms work satisfactorily. C. E. Mallowes is effecting improvement in Master Latour. He is a solidly framed customer, and properly placed, should win races this season. His stable mate, Bert Hinkler, will have an opportunity at Avondale this week-end to' show whether lie has improved since last seen out. Twelve Te Aroha equines will be competing at Avondale this week. G. A. Reid’s Crown Arch, Glenstar, Trig and Archeen arrived there early in the week,'- while Queen Arch, King Win, Art Gallery, Marble King, Balle Star, Lucky Alice, William of Orange and Bert: Hinkler are already on the scene. LocalS sportsmen- are not at all* sanguine^of the winning, prospects ..of- the local ‘ horses* but still >a minor share of the prize money may come this way. Volimond Back Mr. P. A. Swiney’s Volimond and Marble Arch-Lacemaker filly are doing steady work on their owner’s property. From this out they are expected to be frequent visitors to the local training centre to put in fast work. Trig did not run up to track form at Wanganui, but will do better in due course, when his condition becomes more solid. Glenstar is none the worse for the trip, and may be showing to advantage in the near future. A. E. Cox is working a steady im^

provement on Miss Albyn, the fullsister to Woody Glen. She is furnishing into a more robust filly, and gives evidence of being able to gallop. The same .mentor is allotting Dainty Arch steady work, and she may t>e ready to race this side of Christmas. Sir Russell is one that looks quite ready to race, but as he is not one of a very robust constitution his trainer-lessee prefers to give him more time before asking him to race this season. Patience is also being exercised with -Unique, by the defunct Tonbridge, who certainly looks as if he should pay his way when wanted. Since returning from the Wellington winter fixture, where he ran second, third and first, Marble King has given the impression that he may be a little on the down grade. During the past few days he has brightened up. so much s 6 that lie will be by no means one of the lesser lights of the Te Aroha brigade performing-, at Avondale. ..

He is an attractive galloper, but even more so is the Rossendale —Demeter gelding Appledore. who is a shapely black. He is being given plenty of time, and on looks this policy of patience should be well rewarded.
