Roundelay to Contest Hawkes Bay Guineas
manawatu activities WAIKATO TRIP CANCELLED (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Friday. Following upon 43 hours of intermittent rain, yesterday morning broke but despite the fact that the cits at Awapuni had not suffered tra n y great extent, there was not a tc ' at deal of fast work attempted. S >ho local centre furnishes 13 nomiitions for the Hawke’s Bay fixture ♦ morrow week, but at least one in Ving Hal will not make the trip. The rtief Ruler gelding ran a nail into vis knee when in his box at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt fixture, and the ishap has left aome ill-effects, as a «ult of which he will now be acr6rded a spell. Like his dam. Hallowvonia and his grand-dam, Merrivonia, this three -year-old promises to require his far from flattering showing at Wanganui, the handicapper has given Sunart any latitude at Hast« f n es the old fellow being required to parrv 10.8 —equal top-weight with Tresham — in the Tomoana Hack Hurdles. The Sunny Lake gelding ,is nevertheless displaying plenty of dash In his work, although his task yesterday was restricted to pace work on the sand. e .. Hunger Strike Disrank, Masher, and Arrowhead fleure in the Glenaray Hack Handicap at Hastings, but Arrowhead likewise c'aims an engagement in the Flaxmere Hack Handicap, and he will be found preferring the shorter distance. Disranlc, who proved somewhat delicate as a’youngster, is on hunger strike at present, and his future movements will naturally depend on how he fares in the interim. Yesterday morning Arrowhead and Rouex were to have been partners in a five-furlong gallop, but Arrowhead Jumped off prematurely, and Rouex was not sent in pursuit, the Arrowsmith gelding running the distance alone in 1.15 without being pressed. The flags on the course proper were some 30 feet out from the rails. Masher, who returned his backers a substantial dividend at Wanganui, was not seen out. Originally Roundelay and King Hal were local nominations for the Haw ke’s Bay Guineas, but with King Hal relegated to the paddock, Awapuni will have only the Limond —Tivoli gelding to represent it in the classic. In company with an unnamed Thurnham gelding. Roundelay jumped off at the seven furlongs to pick up Killogie at the half-mile peg, and go on to fulfil his task very attractively in 1.39. Roundelay is a bold galloper, with a great raking stride, and at Wanganui the nature of the course was against him. Peculiarly enough, the river city course has ever proved an unlucky one for G. Jones, that mentor having never been able to register a victory here. In all probability, the Hastings course will be more to Roundelay's liking, and the chestnut might give a good account of himself. To Claim an Allowance Blimp has been weighted at 5.6 for the Spring Handicap at Hastings, but whereas he could not claim the apprentice allowance at Wanganui, the services of W. Broughton will permit of hi 3 poundage being reduced to 8.1. at Hastings. The Gasbag gelding was restricted to pace work yesterday morning on the sand in company with Tigrano, but his third at Wanganui after not being favoured in the running indicated that he is very well at present. A stable companion of Blimp’s in the Night Raid—Sea Maid youngster. Sea Scout, will be a competitor in the Nursery Handicap at Hastings. A shapely sort, this youngster has displayed speed on occasions, and as she will receive a stone from Simba, the
filly should improve on her display in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. Awapuni will have three representatives in the Flaxmere Hack Handicap at Hastings in Archeria, Arrowhead and Pari. The first-named ran second to Shot Silk at a difference of Gib at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting, but the performance of the Archery gelding oxi that occasion was not very impressive and he has hardly lived up to his breeding as yet. Pari has likewise been in action of recent date without being able to get in the money, but—the Leighton gelding prefers the top of the ground and should do better later -on. The Trial Stakes at Hastings has attracted three Ideal candidates in King Acre, Winlock and-Tea Taster. The first-named will be having his first outing as a three-year-old. but the patience exercised with the big. upstanding Acre gelding should bear fruit. Yesterday morning King Acre partnered Atareria in a gallop over six furlongs, the youngster keeping his* elder companion busy to run the distance in 1.25 J. Winlock is a Paladin—Lady Kinlock three-year-old filly who has been finishing on in her races to date. Tea Taster is a four-year-old gelding by Tea Tray—Graceful, who ran quite a fair race in the Maiden at Wanganui considering he lacks racing experience. General Jottings J. P. Coyle sent an Acre —Sleeping Beauty youngster along in company with Robbie’s Mistake yesterday morning, the pair running home from the three-furlong post in 42 2-6. The youngster, who will eventually race in Mr. G E. Trevor’s. interests, showed distinct promise. Patearoa, Fiery Comet and Plane were to have run home from the threefurlong post, but they jumped out raggedly and Patearoa led the other pair home by several lengths in 40 2-5. Plane was late in arriving and although he made a bid to get on terms with Patearoa he weakened and Fierv Comet came from the rear to overtake the Warplane gelding just short of the post. J. Kelly is at present working a shapely three-year-old by Lackhafn out of Lady Kotiripo, a Lord Multifid —Kotiripo mare, who was very useful in her day. The Same mentor has also in hand the Kilbroney gelding, Kilorell, who disappointed on the second day at Wanganui, although it was anticipated that the turning nature of the course would be against him. Callanmore. who has been out spelling for some time past, is once again a member of the active brigade. His trainer. R. E. Hatch, is at present in Auckland with Callanmore’s elder half-sister. Piuthair, who will be a competitor in the Avondale Cup. While the Kilbroney mare has been showing improved form of late, a heavy track will discount her prospects. J. Farmer, who is well known in the North Island, having been at one period private trainer to the Wairarapa owner, Mr. W. E. Bidwill, and of more recent years at Marton, is now at Awapuni. having taken over a couple of Greyspear youngsters. A start has been made on the former hurdle training track at Awapuni, it being intended to thoroughly disc the surface, fill in any undulations, and resow the surface. Meantime the jumpers will be catered for on No. 1 grass on t.h.e new tracks. Mrs. A. McDonald’s team were not visitors to the track yesterday morning. the majority of the members haying been treated to a dose of physic. G. New’s active brigade is somewhat curtailed at the present time for the same reason, but a few days spell will find them again pursuing active careers. , Lieutenant Bill was sent home to his owner yesterday by Trainer H. M. Doyle. It had been intended to take the Rangitero gelding North tp the Waikato racing and hunt fixtures, but as the result of the amendment in dates, the trip was not deemed worth while and the gelding will now be treated to a spell.
