DICKENS’S VILLAINS
STUDY BY FELLOWSHIP Numerous readings portraying the comic side of Dickens’s villains were given before a large attendance at a meeting of the Auckland Dickens Fellowship last evening. The programme was arranged by Mr. G. G. Grant. The vice-president, Mr. W. E. Arey, presided. The readings included:—“A Sally by Sally Brass” (“Old Curiosity Shop”), Miss Haresnape; “The Resurrection of Quilp” (“Old Curiosity Shop”), Mr. W. Mervyn Lusty; “Good Mrs. Brown” (“Dombey and Son”), Mrs. Forrest; “Carker, the Manager” (Dombey and Son”), Miss Cutler; “Mr. Squeers Comes Home” (“Nicholas Nickelby”), Mr. W. E. Arey; “A Squeers Family Interlude” (“Nicholas Nickelby”), Mr. T. Clarkson; “Stryver’s Subtlety” ('“Tale of Two Cities”), Miss Adcock; “.Terry Cruncher—Tradesman” (“Tale of Two Cities”), Dr. Kenneth. Gordon.
Mr. C. Kidson will have charge of the next programme.
