Sprinters Show Great Speed at Avondale IMPRESSIVE YOUNGSTERS A feature of a fairly quiet morn- I ing at Avondale today was a bril- ! I iant half-mile sprint by the Flying Stakes candidate, Silvermine. The Taranaki gelding was accompanied by Knightlike, and although they finished on terms the latter was all out, while Filvermine might have been able to do a bit better. The pair jumped oft together and they pre on terms throughout. The ■ low' first furlong on the turn was cut t in 14 1-', and they came home ° ... the 1 -t three in 36 2-5, the halfmile being encompassed in 50 The treaties on the course proper were g t iH out 55ft, so it was a ratUing good \nother rather impressive display was that given much later in the , ,'orninK—Silvermine and Knlghtlike f. i-o among the early workers—by Tahoma, who galloped half a mile with White Fang. The latter held the •idvantage over the initial furlong, but the three-year-old quickly gathered him up and over the last bit White F; ng was being hunted along to keep up Tho time. 52 2-5, was only fair, but the manner in which Tahoma was hitting out suggested that he will be a hard one to beat tomorrow. Fair Work-outs Flying Juliet took 1.6 3-5 to run five fjiionus. and her stable mate, Indolent, registered J.B for the same journey. l?oth look well and could have done much better. back, at the end of five furlongs in 1.6 2-5. The Cup candidate looks very well indeed. The Two-Year-Olds A number of recently-arrived two-year-olds were given easy tasks, among them being King Win, Betterment and Royal Ruler. Twelve months ago Te Awamutu trainer W. Stone provided the winner of the Avondale Stakes in Supremacy. In tomorrow’s classic he wi.l have Royal Ruler to represent him. This is a fine big chestnut gelding by Chief Ruler, and wili carry the colours of the wellknown sportsman, Mr. B. Hart. This morning Royal Ruler was restricted ;o a spin up the straight, and he went very fast indeed. This youngster nay make it. interesting for the more boomed year-olds tomorrow.
