A Big Card

BRILLIANT CUP CONTENDERS A Two-Year-Old Problem A FIRST-CLASS quality field in the Cup, and a big crowd of two-year-olds in the Stakes, not to mention the divided Maiden Plate, and a rich assortment of talent in the other events, mark the opening day’s programme tomorrow of the spring meeting of the Avondale .Jockey Club. The course is in excellent order. “Early Bird’s” review of the prospects for tomorrow is set out below.

MAIDEN PLATE Of £270: winner of each Division £IOO, second Horse £25, third £10; 7 furlongs

The dividing of this race reduces the field to reasonable proportions, but with 1G or more runners the smart beginners will have something in their favour. In the first division the most fancied are the three-year-olds Clopton and Gay Luke, and Carmint, Alloy. Measurer, Mountain Guide and Te Hoia. Crimestor and Fraser read the pick of the second division, while others, quite capable of capturing the stake appear to be Bert Hinkler, Catoma. Gold Lily, Nassock. Otranto, Restaurant, Section. Snowplane (who could not act in the heavy ground at Marton), and Tetrarchate. Punters will have to pick it in one each time, foY the dividends are payable

on each winner only. Favourites in the respective divisions may be the three-year-olds. who should take a whole lot of beating at this period of the year:

First Division Second Division CLOPTON CRIMESTOR MEASURER—MOUNTAIN GUIDE FRASER (bracket) 10 0C KINGSLAND HURDLES 1C..L.0 of £ 200; 1J miles

Quantity, if not quality, is represented in this hack jumping event, and a. surprise may be in store. Lady Spalpeen was finishing on in a hack race at Ellerslie last month and has an undeniable chance here. Waltzer has a lot of toe and the journey will sit him; his second to Horomea at Trentham was quite

good. Red Comet and Gold Rep may be wanting a race, but Harbour View's Ellerslie form was promising. Giena Bay should have done better than a second at Marion, and if he is not hampered by the big field may take a lot of beating. Master Doon does not stay these days. Master Roley. an improved horse, showed pace ar. Pakuranga Sir Archie. Sleepy Sol. Luminary and Whaka King are interesting recruits to the game, especially Sleepy Sol, who will find the ground conditions ideal. It is a hard race to win. but the optimists may pin their faith to: WALTZER and LADY SPALPEEN 1 1 A MEMBERS’ HANDICAP Of £250; 6 furlongs

The presence «>f several good three-year-olds in this field makes it almost as interesting as the bigger sprint, the Flying Stakes, for these youngsters promise to make their mark. Lave is an unlikely runner, and of the older horses Marble King. Billikins, Lady's Boy. Liaison, Value, Mithra. Cynthia X

;md Welkne may prove to be the best. There are half a dozen three-year-olds engaged, these being Leader. Flying Prince. Carl Idem. Belle Star, Cymon and Talionv:. all except Belle Star, winners. These juveniles promise to play a a big part, so that backers may go for two of them in:

LEADER and TAHOMA AVONDALE CUP Of *900: 1; miles This is a really select field and promises to furnish an exciting struggle. Many of the horses engaged have had winter racing to tune them up Fully half Of the field of 15 must be given royal chances of getting into the money. In the first half of the handicap

there are Prince Humphrey. Historic. Prodice, Paddon, Barometer. High Pitch and Singleton, and on the other side under eight stone, Hyde Park, Piutliair. King Emerald, The Lover and True Blood, all of whom must be at least treated with respect. The complete review of this interesting and puzzling affair is given elsewhere, so that it remains but to fine it down to a quintet comprising Prince Humphrey, Historic, Prodice. Paddon and Piuthair, and of these good horses backers may be found declaring in favour of: HISTORIC and PADDON

AVONDALE STAKES Of £500; 5 furlongs There is sure to be a big weeding out in this two-year-old classic, and a reduction of the field by half would be welcomed. The post positions and ability to begin will be two big factors. Nothing has been doing better on the tracks than Cylinder. Biddy’s Boy, Hard Words (the Mazabuka gelding). Oil King. Orapai, Royal Ruler, Ruling King, Watch Officer, Zadok, Foot Rule, Gesture, Imamint, Vanessa and Isa (second at Wanganui and a

doubtful runner), so it will be seen that, backers will have a wide scope for their speculations, for practically all those mentioned are nearly certain to go to the post. To fine them down to half a dozen there would be left in Cylinder, Hard Words, Biddy’s Boy, Royal Ruler, Ruling King and Foot Rule, with the last-named well suited by the long straight, taking a line through her Wanganui running. Favourites on the totalisator may be: HARD WORDS, BIDDY'S BOY, CYLINDER

FLYING STAKES HANDICAP Of £500: 6 furlongs There is no dearth of sprinting talent here. Benzora may want a race, but Silvermine will be all the better for his Wanganui outing. Gold Money is an honest-to-good-ness performer, and her track work suggests that she is as good as ever. She is a worthy galloper to repre-

sent Ellerslie. Lady Quex is well, for she pleased when sprinted down the Avondale straight yesterday. Lucy Rose was a winner at Ellerslie at the Great Northern meeting, and as she has been kept going since she will find the course to her liking. Flying Juliet may not be ready, but Eaglet, winner of the Marlon sprint and then the Wanganui Guineas, will he wanted —and the filly may nor be found wanting when it is all over. Eaglet is brilliant, and if she goes under then the victor should be entitled to the spoils. White Fang would prefer a longer journey Awarere galloped brilliantly yesterday morning. and with his luxury weight may be in the picture throughout. Kingfield may want a run. and Air King is looking the part and may be prominent. Knightlike. too, pleased yesterday by a redl good sprint, and Ruffles, who appears to be improving, and The Begum impress most of those near the bottom. Tfe Atiawa hardly looks ready. It is a fine field, capable of producing a-wonderful tussle. The machine favourites may be:

EAGLET and GOLD MONEY SWANSON HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile Anything drawn farther out than number eight or ten will have the hardest part to do in this race, so that should the eventual winner start wide out. he will be entitled to the greatest Yespect. Good Boy. Leitrim. Indolent and Sea Cob (a Pakuranga winner), are all speedy, and of those further down the scale

there are Some Lady. Takarunga. Prince Val. Ariliana, Motere (not a good beginner), Carmint and Merry Mason. It seems a hopeless proposition endeavouring to sort out the horses likely to do the best, for the barrier draw is all important. However, form says most for the chances of a couple of improving hacks in:— * SEA COB and MOTERE

HENDERSON HANDICAP Of £250; 7 furlongs This is something of a puzzler for those who remain to see the day’s sport out to its pleasant (or bitter?) end. Desert Glow looks all the better for his outing at the Pakuranga meeting, and Le Clioucas continues to gallop well at Takanini. Transformer cannot be so good as of yore, and Valkon may

not run. Amor is a good southern handicapper practically at the threshold of what should prove a promising career in open company: he is a game sort of custom* . Ohinemuri is a possibility, for this distance will suit her. There is a h--o*ic' over Maori Boy: one could almost say he is makutu. that ts the dale. Of the others Standfast. True Blood and Partial Eclipse are preferred. It is an open race, with a possibility of two promoted hacks being prominent ill the market:— MAORI BOY and STANDFAST
