WATERSIDER’S LOOT
BUTTER FOUND IN MAN’S BAG
TAKEN FROM HORORATA A good record of nine years’ standing was broken this morning when Gordon Bishop, a waterside worker, aged 31, pleaded guilty to a charge of receiving. Bishop was caught last evening with a block of butter from the Hororata’s cargo in his bag. T>ISHOP pleaded guilty to a charge of receiving seven pounds of butter valued at 10s 6d, the property of the New Zealand Steamship Company, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. An alternative charge of theft was withdrawn. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Bishop had been working in the hold of the Hbrorata loading butter for London. When the vessel had pulled out into the stream, he had been caught by Detective-Sergeant McHugh coming out of the wharf gate with the butter in his bag. “There is no question that a box of butter was pillaged and that accused got some of it,” added the chief-detective. "There is nothing previously known against him.” Mr. Duthie gave Bishop an excellent character. He had been working nine years on the wharves and this was his first lapse. Counsel asked for leniency, adding that accused was a married man with two children. “It is usual to give terms of imprisonment in these cases, but we have not had so many lately,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., imposing a fine of £5, in default a month’s imprisonment.
