NEW STATUS SOUGHT
ROAD BOARD TO BOROUGH COUNCIL ONE TREE HILL PROPOSAL The question of raising the One Tree Hill Road Board to the status of * borough council was discussed at * ! meeting of the road board last evenI ing. Mr. J. Hardwicke presided. A letter received from Mr. W. j. I Jordan, M.P., said that he failed to see the necessity of appointing a commission a second time, seeing the petition had not met with the approval of a previous one. The Undersecretary of the Department of Internal Affairs said that there was no legal authority whereby the setting up of a commission might be dispensed with. Mr. R. G. Clark remarked it was a shame that the ratepayers should be put to the expense of a second commission. The only alteration in the district since the sitting of the previous one was an increase of 1,500 in the population. It was decided that, to put the question on a legal footing, the correct procedure should be adhered to. A request by the Auckland Transport Board to keep street lights on along tram and bus routes, to 1 a.m., was deferred to next meeting. The traffic inspector’s report stated that, in reference to the proposal to substitute whi'e lines for traffic domes now in use, a general adoption of the plan would be inadvisable, considering the nature of the road surfaces in the district. White lines should be placed at intersections, where a dome is not practicable, such as Great South and Manukau Roads. It was decided to leave the question to the inspector’s discretion. The building inspector’s report indicated a considerable activity in the district. During the past fortnight 14 permits had been issued, to a total value of £12,396. The number of building permits issued since January 1 is 190, valued at £82.421.
