“RIO RITA”
A COLOURFUL SHOW Brightness, colour and gaiety predominate in “Rio Rita,” that fascinating musical comedy of Mexican life which is attracting large audiences nightly at St. James Theatre. Last evening there was another large and very enthusiastic audience, when the delightful singing of Miss Gladys Moncrieff, the clever eccentric dancing of Miss Janette Gilmore, and the fine comedy works of Messrs. Mallen and Norman drew enthusiastic applause almost continuously throughout the evening. A captain of Texas rangers in search of a notorious bandit meets Rio Rita, whose brother is wrongfully under suspicion of being the famous Kinkajou. This forms the basis of a very romantic story which has a happy culmination in a triple wedding. Mr. Leslie Pearce, as the ranger, makes a manly lover and with Miss Moncrieff is heard in some very tuneful duets. The stage settings are of a particularly high standard, full advantage being taken of the many opportunities for spectacular colouring. The work of a large chorus is also good and a well-trained ballet adds to *lhe variety of the show in many cleverly executed numbers. The play should continue to draw big houses for some time yet.
