WHANGAREI CRICKET

REVIEW OF PAST YEAR From Our Own Corespondent WHANGAREI, Today. Tho report presented at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Cricket Association on Tuesday evening showed that the past season was a very important one for cricket in Whangarei and for North Auckland. The ground committee had made a determined effort to provide a permanent ground for cricket. A lease under very favourable terms had been signed with the Harbour Board for 21 years, with a right of renewal for a further 21 years. The ground had been thoroughly dried, levelled, and sown, and in spite of unfavourable weather the grass had taken well. It should be in suitable order for playing on during the coming season. Up to date, £297 15s had been spent on the new ground, and there was still £6O in hand in the ground account out of the original sum of £356 15s obtained from the joint queen carnival with the hockey association. The ordinary balance sheet showed that the season had been an expensive one, mainly owing to the visit and entertainment of representative teams. Beginning the season with a balance of £l4 14s, the association had liabilities amounting to £lO 16s at the close. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P.: president, Mr. E. T. Gash; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. E. Danes; auditor, Mr. Ft. R. Roseman; grounds committee, Messrs. G. L. Whimp, A. Drever, R. Jennings, B. Flewellyn, and W. G. Grove. The presentation of a gold medal, donated by Mr Flewellyn, to the player who took most catches during last season, was made to E. T. Gash.
