Avondale Finals

TRIALS ON AUCKLAND TRACKS

Cup Horses Go Well

THE tracks at Avondale and Ellerslie presented an animated appearance this morning, when trainers put their charges through the final trials for the Avondale meeting, to be held on Saturday and Monday next.

AT AVONDALE

CRIMESTOR DOES BEST The conditions at Avondale were ideal, the morning being crisp, with an entire absence of wind. The trestles were out 55 feet on the course proper, and the going was excellent. Several interesting gallops were witnessed, the work-outs well rewarding those who were present to see them. The first out were the two-year-olds Cylinder and Appeal, who went half a mile, carrying about level weights. The latter jumped off two and a-half lengths in front, but Cylinder picked him up at the end of a furlong and a-half, and leaving the Trentham youngster in the run home finished half a dozen lengths in front. Cylinder’s time, 53, was pretty good, and could have been improved upon. Cylinder is a very smart youngster, likely to play a conspicuous part in the early two-year-old classics. Appeal disappointed, but could have done better. A Cup Trial One of the most entertaining trials was that of the Avondale Cup candidates, Star Stranger and Historic, both being ridden by light boys. The former went a mile and he was picked up at the seven furlongs by Historic. The latter was on the outer, and coming round the big bend he was wide out, and although the pressure was not applied to either horse Historic finished up a couple of lengths in front of his companion. Timed separately, Star Stranger took 15 1-5 for the initial furlong, all on the turn, and cut out the first halfmile in 65 2-5, the five in 1.9 3-5, and completed his task comfortably in 1.50. The Martian gelding is well forward in condition. Historic covered his first half-mile in 55, and although apparently bowling along comfortably he ran his last three in 39 4-5, the time for his seven furlongs being 1.34 3-s—a good effort. Historic promises to run a great race in the Avondale Cup. Piuthair. who showed distinct promise at Wanganui of returning to form, was let off with an easy task, not being asked to make time over a mile. The first half occupied 57 3-5 and the full journey 1.54 4-5. It was just a nice work-out. The mare looks very well. Go'od Youngster

The two-year-old Chief Link (Chief Ruler—Silver Link) was much too good for Lineage, beating the latter very comfortably over three furlongs in 37 3-5. Chief Link is not engaged in the Avondale Stakes, but nevertheless may win a race before returning to Hawera. An interesting display* was that given by the Guineas candidate False Scent and Knightlike. They were sent five furlongs, but were eased up over the last furlong. They ran the first four smartly in 51 1-5, an exceptional effort, and False Scent here left his companion to finish a couple of lengths clear in 1.5 3-5. The three-year-old is on the improve, and Knightlike appears a possibility for a good sprint in the near future. Better Than Ever Maori Boy again galloped in rare style, Singleton being under pressure to finish up with the black at the end of a good seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5, the first half mile occupying 53 1-5. Maori Boy appears to be in better form than ever. Oil King and Orapai, from almost a stand, were well clear of Huntique ut the end of four furlongs in 53 4-5, the first-mentioned going really well. Silvermine, looking in good fettle, and Te Atiawa, sprinted five furlongs easily in 1.8. After Breakfast Gold Lily surprised by running half a mile in 53 4-5, which was the best for this distance up to this time, although it was well beaten later. Trig showed plenty of pace to beat Owairaka frpm the five-furlong post, recording the good time of 1.5 3-5. The former is not engaged on Saturday.

Air King broke away from the seven-furlong post well ahead of Flying Prince and maintained his advantage, returning 1.20 3-5. for the six furlongs, the pair pulling up at the mile and a-quarter post. Air King ran his first three furlongs in 39, and is obviously very well. Not much line could be obtained on Flying Prince. The Best Six A similar performance was asked of Awarere and Value, the former winning nicely in a smart 1.19 2-5, the first three furlongs being cut out in 38 3-5. Awarere is in excellent fettle, and with his light impost may make it interesting for the more fancied runners in the sprint on Saturday. An impress-ive gallop was registered by Crimestor, who had Ruffles hard ridden to keep with him over half a mile in 50 3-5. This was easily the best gallop of the morning. Ruffles got the best of the start, and his time was 51 2-5. Crimestor ran his first three furlongs in 37 4-5. Prodice and Desert Glow were sent once round, nine furlongs, picking up Arikitoa at the six furlongs. The first pair, from a slow jump-off, were never bustled, and Arikitoa led them home, the latter’s time being 1.22 3-5. ! Prodice and Desert Glow were pulling up, but all the same they cut out the nine furlongs in 2.5, the first halfmile taking 55 3-5, and the last half the same. Prodice looks a picture, and should run a great race in the Avondale Cup. F. Loomb’s trio of two-year-okls, Illuminagh, Valmarie and Biddy's Boy were sprinted half a mile, the first pair finishing well clear of their companion in 53 1-5. Biddy’s Boy, however, was not asked to gallop seriously; he is an impressive-looking youngster. Other Tests Appellant jumped off at the six several lengths in front of Maurieana and was eased to let the latter draw level in 1.21 2-5. Appellant is galloping well. Bob Amans and Crown Arch ran half a mile in 53 2-5. The two-vear-olds, Running Over and Set Fair, went four furlongs in 54. the latter getting a break and being in front all the way. Vanerra. wide out, was 'not bustled to run half a mile in 55 4-5, and Lady Eustace and a companion recorded o 3 4-5. Glenstar sprinted six furlongs in company and continued for another circuit before he could be pulled up. Partial Eclipse was worked on the plough. The Te Awamutu trainer, F. E. Loomb. was not able to superintend the work of his team of nine horses this morning, being a victim of an attack of pleurisy. Most probably he will not be in attendance Avondale during the progress of the meeting.

AT ELLERSLIE

HYDE PARK IMPROVING Oustanding among the final tests at Ellerslie this morning for the Avondale meeting was a brilliant seven furlongs by- X. Cunningham’s horses. Standfast, Cynthia X. and Hyde Park, the trio notching the splendid time of 1.31 4-5. Hyde Park was wide out all the way. W. Kemp's pair, Gold Money and King Emerald, were also responsible for an attractive effort in winding up five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. For galloping, trainers had the use of the course proper, with the trestles out 35 feet. Number three grass, too, was available, and came in foi a fair amount of support. The spell of fine weather lately has left all tracks in good order, and the going was really fast. Consistent Gallopers Gold Money and King Emerald ran abreast for their five furlongs in 1.5 3-5, and after going over the first furlong slow they wound up the two in 25 4-5, there being nothing to choose between them at the end. The honours of the trial were with Gold Money, for the mare had much the worst of the weights, and was on the outside of her companion. Golden Wedding and Myola left half a mile behind in 51 3-5. and it was the former who pleased most. That there is nothing wrong with Standfast, Cynthia X. and Hyde Park was evident when X. Cunningham sent them seven furlongs in 1.31 4-5, the trio finishing in a heap, with Standfast showing out. There was no loitering once on the journey, and with two furlongs carved out in a slick 24, and three in 38. it is pretty certain that the Ellerslie candidates will carry a lot of money in their engagements on Saturday. Bombarder went alone over six furlongs in 1.20 3-5, the first half of the trip taking 40 1-5. Bombarder has come on a lot since racing at the Pakuranga meeting. For six furlongs Leader and Amor took 1.20 4-5. They hopped away together and ran the first two in 26 2-5. passed the three in 39 1-5, and came home together, not being pushed right out. This pair should get on the winning list before returning South, particularly Leader, who is a most impressive galloper. On the Improve With every gallop Gemliglit is improving, and he was doing better than Tetrarchate at the conclusion of six iurlongs in 1.20 2-s—the best time lor the distance. The latter is a maiden, but shapes well. Grand Spirit covered two furlongs down the straight in 22, while Brampton and Respirator together, and Good Idea alone, ran an easy half mile. Restaurant and a companion were partnered for four furlongs in 53, and over the same ground War Officer and Kawainga registered 52. The Lover and Palmares ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.6 4-5, the former finishing the stronger. Corinax and Alloy were not bustled for six furlongs in 1.24, while Currajong went smoothly over three furlongs in 41 3-5. After breakfast Chesterman moved over six furlongs in 1.24 2-5, Royal Lad joining him in the last half-mile. Eager Rose easily beat Theodolite over four furlongs in 52, while Zircon went a mile in 1.50, not being bustled. Roman Pearl was lengths clear of Catoma at the end of five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, and in a furlong less Diamond Queen and Bizarro were practically together, taking 52, the first furlong in 12 3-5. Bennie had a slight advantage over Mountain Guide when this pair travelled six furlongs in 1.21 3-5, and Dark Prince disposed of five iurlongs in 1.9 4-5. Sir Archie and Kauri Park ran once round in 2.12, finishing on terms. Hannibal and Wild Country sprinted three furlongs in 40 1-5, and for half a mile Measurer was better than Spring Abbey in 52 2-5. Tukunoa and Lady’s Boy completed four furlong's in 52 3-5, the latter doing it best. Some Youngsters The two-year-olds, Tremetus, Raftlight and Thespis, essayed three furlongs, Ruling King going a furlong further. Tremetus showed a lot of speed in the middle stages and was with Ruling King at the end of three in 37 1-5, the latter continuing on for half a mile in 51 2-5. Spring Song, Speak Out and Thais wound up half a mile in 56 4-5, and Master Doon and Kamehameha were together for six furlongs in 1.24, Lady Spalpeen and a companion recording similar time. On number three grass Lady Court had a slight call over Salamander, Great Emblem and Tambourine at the end of four furlongs, the last three furlongs in 40 1-5. Odin covered three furlongs in 39 2-5. Tin Whistle (E. Garrett) and Marita (J. Burgess) Avere associated over the steeplechase fences on the fiat, fencing satisfactorily. Tin Whistle was trotted round to the top of the straight, and completed the task again in company with Calithe (R. Olive). Master Clements (A. McGregor) negotiated two hurdles well, and then ran half a mile well within himself. Adjuster (W. Nightingale) made no mistakes over four fences, later covering a mile at a good three-quarter pace.
