NEW IMPORT TAX

PROPOSAL FROM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ONEHUNGA-MANUKAU BODY Reporting to the general meeting of the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce last evening, the executive committee notified that it had replied to a telegram from the secretary of tho associated chambers opposing the operation of the increased primage duty, and recommended instead an additional duty on luxuries and foreign goods. Mr. T. C. Schnackenberg contended that this reply fell short of the mark. He pointed out that New Zealand bought from England only half the value in goods sold in return, while we bought from America twice as much as exported to that country. The executive’s reply, however, was confirmed, and as a result of further discussion it was agreed to communicate with the member for the district, Mr. W. J. Jordan, urging him to oppose any increase in the primage duty, but in order to assist the Minister of Finance to balance his Budget, to advocate that the required revenue should be derived from an additional impost on goods, especially luxuries, manufactured outside the Empire. Varied opinions were expressed by members on the question of representation at the Auckland Winter Show next year, and it was ultimately decided to set up a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. C. F. Milnes, J. Kennedy-Ross, W. Lovering, F. TI. Dodd, T. H. McKeever, L. Bray, and A. G. Houldsworth, to go into the question, and report to the next meeting of the chamber.
