AIR BASE FOR AUCKLAND
PAPATOETOE URGES CLAIMS DISTRICT’S ADVANTAGES As a result of representations by a deputation consisting of the presidents of the Papatoetoe Welfare League and Chamber of Commerce, it was decided at last evening’s meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board to ask Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki, to place before the authorities in Wellington the advantages of Papatoetoe as an air base. Colonel S. J. E. Closey, president of the Welfare Leagtie. asked the board to assist in the establishment of an airport in Papatoetoe. He said the league had been in communication with the authorities, who admitted the many advantages of the district. Under the present circumstances the available land was too dear, and the limited finances of the Aero ' Club would not allow the expenditure. The question was serious as far as New Zealand was concerned, which was 20 years behind the times. Transport conveniences from the district were sufficient to give good service to other parts of Auckland. Fifty-two trains and 100 buses travelled from Papatoetoe to Auckland daily. Mr. H. C. Ernest, president of the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce, endorsed the previous speaker's remarks.
