STEAMERS FOR SOUTH BLAMED “GOVERNMENT FALLEN IN?” (THE SV'S'S Parliamentary Reporter) 1 WELLINGTON, Tuesday. I What was the amount which the ' Union Steam Ship Company was to \ receive from the Government as a! subsidy for the steamship service between the South Island and Australia, was the question asked by Mr. F. Waite (Clutha) during the debate on the Department of Industries and Commerce estimate in the House today. There was suggestion, he said, that the Government had “fallen into a hole” in its negotiations with the Union Company. The Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, stated that the Government would not fall into any hole. Later Mr. A. W. Hall (Hauraki) asked what was the subsidy paid by the Government for the South IslandAustralia shipping service. Mr. Cobbe replied that the subsidy for the service was a matter for the Postmaster-General.
