Great Fire Follows Explosion at Hull
OIL TANK BURSTS IMMENSE WALL OF FLAME (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. Hull’s new oilport at Hedon, where all the big storages are concentrated, was the scene of a terrific fire following an explosion in the Anglo-American Oil Company’s 500,000-gallon tank of paraffin. The roof was blown to fragments, the windows were shattered, and workmen were thrown down. An immense wall of flame shot .up hundreds of feet, enveloping a wide area in a pall of black smoke. All the available chemicals were collected in Hull to fight the flames. Brigades were summoned from a distance of 50 miles. The burning tank is one of a cluster of 18, on -which water has been successfully played to prevent ignition. It is estimated that the tank will take 48 hours to burn out.
