LIGHT-WEIGHTS AVAILABLE FOR COMING MEETINGS

In the South of late there has been a dearth of good light riders, and with big fields likely to be seen out at Avondale this week-end and at Ellerslia a fortnight hence, trainers and owners would be well advised to get in and book up pilots for their mounts. With, the influx of trainers and their strings of horses from outside centres has come fortunately some good boys, ! so that for the moment at any rate j it would appear as if there will be no i shortage during the coming meetings. | In trainer J. H. Jefferd's stable are . two promising light-weights, A. G. Murray and M. Gilmore. The latter I rode several winners at Hastings not ! so long ago, and with the experience j gained then and since his services j should be in demand. Murray was for \ some time located in the Manawatu. < and he proved himself before join- ! ing up recently with the Hawke’s Bay ! mentor. Bast season Murray rode 20 winners and Gilmore 13, so they both know the shortest way home. Another light-weight to be available here for the forthcoming meeting is C. Davis, of Hawke’s Bay, who has been in the limelight of late. He won two races at Marton on Full Mark, and at Wanganui last week he rode the big dividend payer, Masher. These three wins in short time indicate that Davis is fit and in form, so that he should have no difficulty in obtaining mounts. The way be punched Full Mark home at Marton. coming from well back each day, was illuminating. Davis. Murray and Gilmore will be at Avondale this week riding work so that owners and trainers will know where to get hold of them if they want riders.
