PRONOUNCING MAORI
GREATER CARE TAKEN IN SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT’S MOVE The desirability of securing the correct pronunciation in schools of Maori names is recognised by the Education Department. A memorandum this morning to the Auckland Eduoation Board said the attention of the department had been drawn to tho question. The importance of the subject was realised, and action had already been taken, a section of pamphlet No. 14 being devoted to pronunciation of native names. The department said, further, that it was considered that lessons from Maoris in the vicinity of teachers’ training colleges would be of great use. The department said it would be pleased to consider any proposals submitted by the board in the event of the suggestion being brought before Mr. D. M. Rae, principal of the Auckland Training College. The memorandum was referred to the principal.
