“BELLE OF NEW YORK?"
GREAT WELCOME AWAITS ISHBEL MACDONALD INVITATIONS POUR IN Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 12.12 p.m. LONDON, Monday. When Mr. Ramsay MacDonald packs for America his 26-year-old daughter Ishbel will have charge of operations. While the attention of the world's statesmen will be directed toward Mr. MacDonald, the eyes of every woman in America will be turned to his daughter, the hostess of No. 10 Downing Street, who has been described by the Queen as a ‘‘thoroughly charming girl.” She bids fair to be the 1929 “Belle of New York.” It is learned that all New York society is anxious to meet her, as the fame of the Prime Minister’s model daughter has spread far and wide. They wish to honour the girl who does not smoke and does not dance; who is versed in the domestic virtues and, while looking after the Prime Minister’s important guests, finds time to play an important part in London's municipal social work. Hundreds of invitations from American hostesses and public bodies are pouring in to Downing Street. The Americans will see a slim, upright
girl with a mass of fluffy brown hair, who speaks in a low, even voice which now and again breaks into an infectious laugh. A British Official Wireless message says the Prime Minister, on the conclusion of his six days' stay in Washington, will leave for New York on October 10, making a brief call en route at Philadelphia, to renew acquaintance with the doctors and the others who attended him during his illness whe he was last in America. # According to present arrangements, Mr. MacDonald will leave New York on October 14 to visit the Niagara Falls, and from Buffalo he will proceed to Toronto. It is possible that he may meet the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. W. L. Mackenzie King, there on October 15, but in any event he will see Mr. King at Ottawa on the following day, and will discuss various matters with him during the three days spent there. Montreal and Quebec will later be visited and Mr. MacDonald is due to leave Quebec for England on “October 25. The purpose of Mr. MacDonald’s Washington visit is solely to provide an outward sign of goodwill, which it is confidently hoped -will establish Anglo-American relations on a firmer basis than has existed since 1812.
