“RIO RITA”
POPULARITY SUSTAINED Its popularity undiminished, Rio j Rita, the dazzling musical comedy now showing at the St. James Theatre, attracted yet another big house last evening. The talented company, headed by Gladys Moncrieff, who has the principal role, and that charming little blonde dancer Janette Gilmore, swept the audience through as merry a three hours as have been enjoyed in Auckland in several years. Set in an almost bewildering riot of Mexican colour and whirled along with never a dull moment, Rio Rita fulfils all that has been promised of it. The ballets are extraordinarily good. Miss Moncrieff’s voice is unforgetable in numbers which, though now old, are invested with a pleasing newness. As her hero, Leslie Pearce, captain of the Texas Rangers, sings in a manner to sustain attention. Janette Gilmore, making her first appearance in New Zealand, has already captured all hearts. Her dancing is remarkable. She is a droll little American and a real comedienne. Messrs. Mallen and Norman keep the house in roars of laughter, the one as the newly-wed bigamist, and his colleague as the lawyer of doubtftil credentials.
