MANUKAU COUNTY WORK
The report of the engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, submitted at the meeting of the Manukau County Council today, stated that a marked improvement in conditions affecting road surfaces was taking place, and it was anticipated that in the future the task of keeping roads in order would be lighter. Preparations for the coming season's construction works were being pushed forward as quickly as possible so that an early commencement cou.d be made with metalling and other works. A total of 28 “school” signs had been ordered and would soon be available for erection at 14 schools in the county. The question of establishing a permanent water supply in the Mangere Riding had reached the stage where water in sufficient quantity had been located and tested and found usable. Field surveys and other work preparatory to laving out the scheme of reticulation were being put in hand. The road giving access to the Aero Club’s grounds on the Manukau Beach Estate was showing signs of heavy wear, and portions were in need of reconditioning. The extent and cost of the work would require early consideration. Plans and specifications for the Pan-rnure-Howick main highway were being completed, and when ready would be forwarded to the Main Highways Board for approval with an application for authority to proceed with the work. Preparations were being made tor the forming and metalling of the unmetalled length of the Alfriston-Papa-kura Road. The Main Highways Board wrote advising the payment of £346 14s 2d to the council’s account, and the Public Works Department advised of the payment of £ll2 19s Sd into the couneil’s fund.
