LABOUR ON TRAMWAYS

PROTEST MADE AGAINST CONTRACT SYSTEM

“POSITION MISUNDERSTOOD”

Deep regret that the Transport Board had let excavation work on its new tramway extensions to contractors instead of itself employing men by day labour was expressed by the Auckland Trades and Labour Council in a letter to the board this morning. The council said the impression gained by ratepayers before the passing of the poll was that ,day labour would be employed in order lo give work to as many men as possible. The board was asked whether the difference in the cost by contract and day labour would be so great as to lay the hoard open to an accusation of wastefulness. “The position is entirely misunderstood,” said Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the bom-d. “The question of employment by day labour or by contract does not affect the number of men employed. Already a considerable number are at work on the building of trams and on other work. As soon as sleepers arrive at the end of this month another 100 men will be employed by the hoard. This misunderstanding has been very hard to remove.” The letter was received.
