FRAULEINS’ FAREWELL
TOMMY GOES MARCHING HOME RHINELAND REGRETS Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.21 p.m. LONDON. Monday. The popularity of “Tommy” on the Rhiueland was strikingly evidenced by incidents of affectionate leave-taking by attractive-looking Frauleins. A German newspaper, commenting on the departure of the Tommies, said they did not seem anxious to leave, and the civilians were equally unwilling to lose them. It is estimated that about 100 out of 6,000 men have married German girls. A sergeant-major said:—“The German girls are great pals, but they are not so good as the English.” The War Office denies that General Sir William Thwaites. who commanded the British Rhineland Army, has been summoned to London. A Paris message says the Quai D’Orsay explains that only a small body of French troops. probably 400, will be stationed at Wiesbaden in succession to the British troops which have been withdrawn. The French Foreign Office points out that Wiesbaden is in the third zone, which will not be evacuated till July. This refers to a report yesterday that Sir William Thwaites had been urgently summoned to London to confer with the War Office regarding a difficult position arising out of France’s intentions to occupy the zone which the British troops evacuate- There was deep German resentment over the prospect of two French regiments occupying Wiesbaden, where It was believed there would in future be only a small formal guard for the Rhineland Commission.
