The railwaymen on the Paeroa section are holding their annual picnic at the Thames Coast next Sunday. A special train will convey the picnickers to Thames, and buses will run to Tapu. Out of 140 ratepayers in Puriri and Hikutaia districts, 132 voted last week in connection with the poll to borrow £11,500 for a water scheme to supply the districts from the Omahu stream. The proposal was carried, the voting being 106 for the proposal and 26 against. The work has been com- ' menced, and tenders for the supply of pipes close on October 7. Whdn the £ 3.000 grant by the Main Highways Board has been expended on the Thames Coast main road, the travelling public \vill have no cause for complaint. A contract has been let to widen a narrow portion of the road north of Tapu. The county engineer (Mr. Jas. Higgins) has plans and specifications for work to cost £I,BOO approved by the authorities. The £3,000' to be spent on the coast road is in 1 i addition to the ordinary maintenance.: j which comes out of the county fund. j
