11-POINT MARGIN AGAINST OTAGO FINE BACK PLAY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Canterbury looked like piling up a cricket score against Otago in the representative Rugby match today. The hdme team scored 21 points in the first spell, but in the second spell the visitors held their own, and the result was a win for Canterbury by 21 points to 10. There were eleventh hour changes in both teams. For Otago Fookes was replaced by Nicholson and Faulks played fullback. Lilburne played instead of Hay for .Canterbury and Merritt replaced Oliver on the wing. The match was played in spring sunshine on a dry ground with a light easterly breeze. Canterbury’s first score was by Scrimshaw. From a scrum Mullan sent the ball out and it flashed through the chain of backs to Merritt, who passed infield to Scrimshaw. Mullan converted. Canterbury 5, Otago 0. Another bright movement by the Canterbury backs sent Merritt off down the sideline. He kicked over the heads of Faulks and McClymont, and Scrimshaw ran over unopposed for his second try. Merritt failed to goal. Canterbury 8, Otago 0. From a movement in Otago’s twenty-five Mullan gave a pass to Merritt on the blind side. Merritt beat two men and shot a swift pass infield to Cotterell, who scored. Merritt goaled. Canterbury 13, Otago 0. Otago then scored its first try. Just outside Canterbury’s twenty-five McClymont took a good pass from Harris and had a clear run for the line. Bathgate converted. Canterbury 13, Otago 5. From a scramble near half-way ball went to Lilburne, who beat two men and passed to Innes, to Carleton, to Merritt. The winger, finding his path blocked, swerved over to the other wing and passed to Manchester, to Hart, who finished off a brilliant movement with a try. Lilburne goaled. Canterbury 18, Otago 5. Carleton and Hart added the next score with a brilliant sideline movement, Carleton touching down at the corner. Lilburpe’s kick missed, and the spell ended with the score 21—5 in favour of Canterbury. The Otago forwards established their superiority in the second spell, and the backs made a better showing. Canterbury was in an attacking position when Douglas broke away and kicked through a gap. Oliver charged through, gathered in the ball, and touched down unopposed between the posts. Bathgate goaled. Canterbury 21. Otago 10. Canterbury was kept mainly on the defensive by the Otago forwards for most of the remainder of the spell, and the game ended without further score.
