FOR ’QUAKE FUNDS
CONCERT BY PONSONBY BOYS’ BAND An excellent concert given by the Ponsonby Boys’ Brass Band last evening: in the Town Hall attracted a somewhat disappointing - attendance. The amount raised as a contribution to the Mayor’s fund for earthquake sufferers was £2l Is. A visit to the South Island earthquake area was described by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the Opposition, who made a special appeal for relief for the affected communities. There would be no waste in the distribution of the funds and cases of real hardship would be met liberally. Mr. S. Martin conducted the band, which played the march “Punchinella.” the overture “La Diademi,” the march “Zanscowinna,” the fantasia “American Beauties,” and the hymns “Eventide” and “Fierce Raged the Tempest.” The band items were finely treated. Music by Mr. Barry Ingall’s Hawaiian orchestra was exceptionally popular. “Aloha Sunset Land” and “Hilo March” were the main numbers. Selected solos were sung by Miss Winifred Hill, soprano, Mr. Walter Brough, baritone, and Mr. J. Ogden, tenor. The accompanist was Mr. James Hutton.
