NINE RACES ON SATURDAY
THE DIVISIONS AVONDALE MAIDEN PLATE Owing to the large number of acceptances received for the Maiden Plate, to be run at the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting next Saturday, the committee has decided that the race will be run in two divisions, arid the stake money has been increased to £270. the winner of each division to receive £IOO, the second horse £25, and the third hors-e £lO. The divisions will be as follow: MAIDEN PLATE Of £270: seven furlongs; to be run in two divisions: winner of each division to receive £IOO, second horse £25, and third horse £lO. FIRST DIVISION
A Good Number It is hard to say how many backers were influenced by a series of coincidences at the Otago Hunt Club meeting on Saturday, but the number must have run into some hundreds when Mount Boa was sent out first fancy for the final event on the programme, a happening not altogether inspired by his prominent running in the President's Handicap earlier in the afternoon, writes “Sir Modred.” The facts are that in the opening event No. 6 on the card—Royal Land—finished in second place to the tune of a fair price, then Full Flight, again No. 6, won the President’s Handicap; in the third race No. 6 (Koremata) was scratched: the fourth event, the Jockey Club Handicap, went to Rascal, No. 6; the fifth race, Wingatui Trotting Handicap, was won by No. 6, Master Jack; the sixth event resulted in another No. 6 in Rag Tag scoring; and finally the winner of the seventh race, Hunters’ Flat Handicap, turned out to be Fresh Breeze carrying No. 6 saddle-cloth. This run on No. 6 set punters looking for the winning numeral in the concluding event, and Mount Boa filled the bill, but on this occasion the fruitful number failed to materialise and the hors© first in demand ran unplaced. For horses bearing No. 6 cloth to return six dividends in succession and record a run of five victories in sequence was a rather remarkable coincidence which appealed to the imagination of many superstitious backers.
