Gonville Hurdles For the Gonville Hurdles, backers went hot and strong for Prince Lu, the Lueullus gelding being entrusted with £1,150, which was twice as much as Ah Wera £507, while Glengariff £207 was comparatively neglected. The j favourite was first to show out, after Askari had delayed the start considerably, and over the first hurdle he was followed by Airtight, Ah Wera, and Novar. Airtight ran up to Prince Lu with a burst of speed on the turn for the second obstacle, and passing the stands he was beside the favourite, the pair being five lengths ahead of Ah Wera, who in turn was five lengths in front of Glengariff, Peshwa, Askari and Novar. Prince Lu commenced to drop back running for the back stretch, where Airtight opened up a gap of five lengths, being followed over the hurdle at six furlongs by Ah Wera, Glengariff, Novar, Prince Lu and Peshwa. RECORD BROKEN
TWO MILES OVER HURDLES ( United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright J MELBOURNE. Sunday. At the Moonee Valley meeting yesterday the Boomerang Hurdle Race was won by Leontes, whose time for the two miles was 3.365. This is the world’s record, beating Red Fuchsia's time (3.37 4-5), which the latter put up in the contest for the Sydenham Hurdle Race at Riccarton on August 17 last. Leontes is a five-year-old gelding by Sea Prince. Last season he contested IS races, and the records published state that he ran unplaced on each occasion. A Terrible Word It is a melancholy fact that slum kiddies are frequentlj* brought up in the innocent use of the lurid language their elders employ. One gamin and his father were on a tram, bound to see the cricket at the London Oval. The journey was a long one to the impatient youngster, who at length exclaimed in anguish, “Hoi. farver, ain't w© never coming to this Oval?” The father turned to his offspring and said sternly. "Halbert, ’ow ofting ’ave I to tell yer not to use the word ’ain't?”
