ART IN AUCKLAND

HIGH STANDARD PRESERVED The policy of the council of the Auckland Society of Arts of rejecting a large number of works submitted for exhibition has preserved a high standard, according to the report of the council, to be presented at the annual meeting of the society on September 27. The past year had been very successful. An interesting feature was the exhibition of works from New Zealand artists in England and Australia. The amount realised from sales, although not so high as expected, was an improvement on the previous year, the total being £3BB 10s, as against £224 11s. As the Auckland University College Council was unable to give the society control of any accommodation in the proposed arts building, efforts were being made to interest the Library Committee of the Auckland City Council in the matter. The suggestion that accommodation should be provided in the proposed new art gallery had been favourably received. The report records with regret the death of Mr. J. H. Upton, a vice-pre-sident of the society for many years, and Mr. M. Trenwith, Mrs. J. Finn and Mr. A. V. Hunt, artist members. A satisfactory financial position is revealed by the balance sheet. The income and expenditure account showed a loss of £sl 15s 2d, and the exhibition resulted in a loss of £92 2s lOd. However, the property fund had increased by £451 5s 6d, so that there was a net increase for the year of £307 7s 6d. The excess of assets over liabilities amounted to £9,720 9s lOd. The following oflicers will retire at the annual meeting but are eligible for re-election:—Dr. E. B. Gunson, president, Messrs. A. S. Boyd, E. W. Payton, E. E. Vaile and H. E. Vaile, vice-presidents; Miss I. M. Copeland and Messrs. R. A. Abbott, E. S. Kohn and R. O. Gross, members of the council.
