His Excellency the Governor-General, t;ir Charles Fergusson, visited Otaki yesterday. He addressed the school children, visited tho native church and opened the flower show.—P.A.

Sir George Elliot returned to Auckland this morning after a brief visit to Wellington.

Mr. John B. Knyly has been elected to the Fiji Legislative Council for the Western Division.

Mr. James Fletcher returned to Auckland this morning after a visit to Palmerston North.

The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, is making satisfactory progress after his illness, and anticipates resuming his official duties next week.

Mr. J. T. Samuel, who graduated in mining at Otago University five years ago, has been appointed assistant director of the Thames School of Mines.

Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of the New Zealand Railways, arrived irom Wellington this morning by the Limited. On Wednesday he will address the Economic Society.

M. Emile Bonnechaux, a French journalist who is making a tour of Nevr Zealand, is at present in Auckland. He is renewing his acquaintance with a. number of New Zealanders whom he met during the war.

The Right Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the Opposition, reached Auckland by the Limited this morning and is at the Grand Hotel. Before returning to Wellington he will open the Reform League’s new offices in the Southern Cross Building.

The following members of Parliament arrived from Wellington by the Limited this morning: Messrs. J. N. Massey, W. J. Jordan, W. Parry, H. G. R. Mason. A. W. Hall, G. C. Munns, A. Harris, H. R. Jenkins, M. J. Savage and LI. M. Rush worth.

Mr. D. J. Maher, of the Supreme Court staff, who has resigned to take up a commercial position, was met by his colleagues yesterday and presented with a set of brushes as an expression of esteem. The presentation was made by the registrar, Mr. C. J. Hewlett, who offered the departing officer the best wishes of the staff.
