Wireless to the “New York Times.’* Reed. 9.5 a.m. BAY OF WHALES, Fri. Brilliant sunshine and 60 below zero —and the last few days have averaged 50 below. The two larg€i houses are crowded with busy men getting ready lor the trail, making charts, overhauling tents, repairing sleeping-bags and footgear, and in the mess hall there is a constant hammering on anvil and on the long table, where the trail stoves, stoves for heating the airplanes, dog-harness and radio sets are being mado or put in condition for summer work. There is no room for quiet discussion from early morning until dinner time, and no escape from the din of manufacture and the bantering which accompanies all efforts.
