NEW AIR-SPEED RECORD

ORLEBAR REACHES ALMOST 358 MILES AN HOUR OWN FEAT ECLIPSED (Australian and. N.Z. rress Asst ci at tort) LONDON, Thursday. Squadron-Leader Orlebar today succeeded at Calshot in breaking the world's air speed record he had established on Tuesday. The airman completed six laps of three kilometres in brilliant fashion and reached a mean speed of 357.7 miles an hour. His fastest lap was flown at an average of 365.1 miles an hour. I Orlebar’s performance will be claimed as a fresh record for Britain. Timed with a stop-watch it was at first thought that his speed was practically the same as on Tuesday. There was great satisfaction at Calshot, however, when it was learned that the earlier performance had been excelled. The correct figures were i discovered by means of a special elec--1 trical timing apparatus. On Tuesday Squadron-Leader Orlebar created a world’s air speed record at Calshot of 355.8 miles an hour. Flying-Officer Stainforth attained a speed of 336.3 miles an hour. Orlebar’s best lap was flown in 368.8 miles ail hour, but the return laps against the | wind lowered his average.
