NATIONALIST DESERTER !
MARKS WILL CONTEST WENTWORTH EARLY FEDERAL ELECTION Reed. 10 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The Federal Constitution provides that Parliament shall meet not later than 30 days after the return of the writs, the date for which will be about November 12. It is anticipated, therefore, that the new Parliament will be called together toward the end of November. Lieutenant - Commander Marks, whose last-minute defection led to the Bruce Government's defeat, said he would contest the Wentworth electorate whether he was selected by the National Party or not. A message from Canberra says the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Bruce, announced last evening that the election will be held on October 12. He will deliver a policy speech at Dandenong, Victoria, on September 23. Mr. J. H. Scullin, Leader of the Labour Opposition, stated yesterday that Mr. Bruce would have to take the full responsibility for the expense of the election. According to a telegram from Melbourne, tile opinion in Victoria is that the Bruce Ministry will gain at least two seats in the coming election. A dispatch from Brisbane says the fact that Sir Littleton Groom, Speaker of the House of Representatives, abstained from recording his vote in favour of the Government on the fatal amendment is the subject of adverse comment in Queensland, as elsewhere. It is highly likely that he will be opposed by an accredited Nationalist candidate.
