CANADA’S BROADCASTING

RECOMMENDATIONS OF ROYAL COMMISSION SEVEN GREAT STATIONS (Australian and N.Z . Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 9 a.m. OTTAWA, Wed. The Royal Commission which investigated radio broadcasting in Canada recommended to the Government on Wednesday that broadcasting be controlled and operated by the Government and owned by a company, with three representatives of the Dominion and one from each of the nine provinces. The task of supplying the programmes would fall on the provincial representatives. The present owners of the stations would be recompensed when the plants were taken over or dismantled. Operation and maintenance expenditure would be met by the licence fees, rental of time for programmes employing indirect advertising, and a subsidy from the Dominion as a nucleus. Seven 50,000watt stations would be provided. The report will be submitted to the technical officers before Cabinet consideration, and would require important legislation. LOSS IN AUSTRALIA UPWARDS OF £15,000 YEARLY Reed. 11 a.m. MELBOURNE, Today. During the hearing of a claim before the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, Mr. Stuart Doyle, chairman of directors of the Australian Broadcasting Company, said that, on the present basis of operating, the company was losing between £12.000 and £15,000 a year.
