POLICE ATHLETES
BAN UPON SPORTS AN IRKSOME REGULATION (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Wed. Reference to the sporting activities of members of the police force was made by the Leader of the Opposition (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) during the discussion in the House of Representatives on the annual report on the police force. Mr. Coates referred to the section of the Police Force Act of 1913 preventing policemen from taking part in boxing, cricket, football and so forth. He did not agree with the section, and said that it was desirable for any young man to take part in sport. He knew that the argument would be advanced that it was unwise for the limb of the law to be associated with sports bodies, but he asked the Minister of Justice (the Hon. T. M. Wilford) to review the law and give policemen the chance of joining teams, provided, of course, that they were not called upon to travel unnecessarily. The Minister said that all encouragement was given the men to join sporting organisations, and mentioned the names of J. W. Mcllolm in athletics and Mcßae in boxing and Cave in football as examples of sporting policemen. He had had to refuse men permission to travel sometimes on rep. tours. Mr. Coates: That was because of the regulations? Mr. Wilford: Yes.
