UNUSUAL THEFT
SOLD BOXING-MAT TO MAORI FOR £1 GAOL FOR OPOTIKI MAN The rather unusual booty, of a canvas boxing-mat valued at £lO was said at the Police Court this morning to have been stolen by Thomas Kelly, a labourer, aged 30. Kelly pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and the mat 1 was stated to be the property of the Opotiki Boxing Association. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Kelly, who lived at Opotiki, had sold the mat to a Maori for £l, but it had been recovered. Kelly was serving a term of one month’s imprisonment for obscene language and was due to be discharged on September 21. "He has quite a long list,” added the chief-detective. “It runs into two sheets and there are many thefts on it.” “The total is 35 previous convictions," agreed the magistrate, and imposed a term of one month’s imprisonment.
